AI Research in the Amazon
Leveraging AI for biodiversity conservation and environmental monitoring.
About Us
The AI Research Group at the IComp (Institute of Computing) of the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) is dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technologies to tackle ecological, environmental, and social challenges, especially within the Amazon rainforest.
Our interdisciplinary team focuses on applying AI solutions to support biodiversity conservation, monitor environmental conditions, and develop sustainable technologies for the region.

Key Projects
- EcoLMM: Multimodal biodiversity monitoring using Large Language Models (LLMs) to analyze diverse data types such as audio and visual inputs for intelligent environmental monitoring.
- ARTES: AI-controlled Aerostat for large-scale environmental monitoring of the Amazon, utilizing reinforcement learning for autonomous navigation and multi-objective decision-making.
- Classification of Animal Species: Automated species classification and counting from camera trap images using AI to create non-intrusive ecological inventories.
- GenIA and Gene Therapies: AI models applied in genomic and therapeutic research.
- IoT for Sustainability: Monitoring water quality in remote regions of the Amazon using IoT sensors and wireless technologies.
Research Areas
- Ecoacoustics and Bioacoustics Monitoring: Utilizing bioacoustic indices to estimate biodiversity and monitor the impacts of anthropogenic noise on ecosystems.
- Computer Vision for Fauna Monitoring: Developing algorithms for camera trap image processing, including zero-shot learning, automatic frame selection, and species detection.
- IoT Infrastructure for Sustainability: Using sensors and IoT systems to monitor environmental variables such as water quality and microclimate in hard-to-access areas of the Amazon.
- Large Multimodal Models (LMMs): Applying LMMs for integrated analysis of diverse data types, including tabular, acoustic, and image data, to create new ecological monitoring solutions.
